Breville Toaster Oven Review by Jamar
My first convection/toaster oven was a $70 Oster. It did a fairly descent job with convection baking, but it’s manual wind-up knob timer control was horrible for toast— even if you set it to what looked like the same spot on the dial, toasting results would vary wildly between barely toasted and burnt to a crisp. After 4 years of swearing at it, I finally decided to invest in a higher-quality oven.
The Breville is wonderful! Superb quality, precise and very readible controls, and excellent results– I think I can now use this for nearly all my oven cooking needs and forget about my full-sized oven.
The Oster was nearly as big as the Breville, and yet could not fit a standard 12″ pizza pan in it– the Breville can (and it even includes a nice non-stick pizza pan). I also like the heavy, durable broiling tray and pan that is included as well.
Like every other toaster oven on the market, it does get hot on all sides and there is no light inside. But the Breville features more internal heating elements than others, so when they’re all on (like when toasting), they provide pretty good illumination, so I don’t find the lack of a light any kind of drawback. The top of the oven allows you to warm plates or keep other foods warm while cooking– a nice touch.
Yes, this Breville was over twice as expensive as the run of the mill Oster, GE, and Black&Decker models, but if you really want a quality, efficient model that can do everything as well as (or better than) a full-sized oven, this is the one to buy!
